Almost every complaint that reaches our support desk about “bad quality” turns out to be a story about the wrong app on the wrong device. The stream was fine. The player was holding a quarter-second buffer on a Wi-Fi connection that needed four, or rendering poster artwork on a stick with a gigabyte of RAM, or refusing to read the programme guide because it had been given an M3U link instead of an Xtream login.
So this is not a list of downloads ranked one to twelve. It is a list of the players worth installing, grouped by the device you are actually holding, with an honest note on where each one falls apart. We sell subscriptions, not apps — we have no affiliate relationship with any developer here, and every player below works with any provider that speaks Xtream Codes, ours included.

The short list
TiviMate — the best IPTV player app for live television
IPTV Smarters Pro — the best one that runs everywhere
If your main screen is a Firestick, an Android TV box or a Google TV device and you spend most of your evenings on live channels, install TiviMate and stop reading. If your household mixes iPhones, tablets, a laptop and a television, install IPTV Smarters Pro everywhere instead and accept a slightly slower guide in exchange for never explaining a second interface to anyone. Everything below is a variation on those two answers.
What separates a good player from a bad one
Feature lists are close to useless here, because every player claims all of them. Five things actually decide how an app feels after a month of use.
Channel switching speed. The gap between pressing the button and seeing a picture. Half a second feels like television. Three seconds feels like a website. On a lineup as large as a full IPTV package — ours runs to around 75,000 channels — you will do this hundreds of times a week.
Guide quality. How many channels and hours fit on screen at once, how it scrolls, and what it does with imperfect data. A guide that leaves broken rows where a channel has no schedule makes an otherwise good package feel cheap.
Buffer control. Whether you can tell the app how much video to hold before playing. This is the single most useful setting in any IPTV player and most apps hide it or omit it entirely.
Weight. How much memory the interface itself eats. On a 4K box with 4 GB of RAM this is irrelevant. On a first-generation streaming stick, a heavy app leaves nothing for the video buffer, and you get a frozen picture that looks exactly like a provider problem.
Organisation. Custom groups, hidden categories, reordered favourites. Without them you scroll past forty thousand channels to reach the eight you watch.
Always choose the Xtream Codes login
Nearly every player offers two ways in: Xtream Codes (username, password, portal URL) or a plain M3U link. Xtream gives you categories, the programme guide and separate Movies and Series sections. M3U gives you a flat list of channel names. Same subscription, dramatically different experience — pick Xtream unless the app has no such option.
Best for Firestick, Fire TV and Android TV
TiviMate — the one to install first
TiviMate was built by someone who watches a lot of live television, and it shows in every decision. The interface is a dense, fast programme grid with the current channel playing in a corner window. Switching is close to instant. Everything is driven with a remote, one thumb, from a sofa — there is no phone-app layout awkwardly stretched onto a television.
Its real advantage over everything else on this list is organisation. You can build custom groups, hide the tens of thousands of channels you will never open, reorder what remains and keep several playlists side by side. On a large package that is not a luxury feature, it is the difference between a usable lineup and a haystack.
The limits are worth stating plainly. It is Android-only — Android TV, Fire OS, Android phones and tablets, and nothing else, as its Google Play listing confirms. Its on-demand section is a plain list rather than a browsing experience. And the features most people end up wanting — recording, multiple playlists, custom groups — sit behind an annual or lifetime Premium licence.
OTT Navigator — TiviMate for people who like settings
OTT Navigator is the enthusiast’s choice: heavily configurable, with per-channel buffer and decoder settings, several interface layouts, catch-up handled well and an archive view that few competitors match. If a specific channel misbehaves and you want to give that one channel a longer buffer without touching the rest, this is the app that lets you.
The cost is a settings menu that intimidates most people. Recommended if you enjoy tuning things; a poor recommendation for a parent’s living room.
XCIPTV and Televizo — solid, quieter alternatives
Both are competent Android players with clean interfaces and a lower learning curve than OTT Navigator. XCIPTV is often what providers bundle as a branded app, so it may already look familiar. Televizo handles the guide well and stays light. Neither beats TiviMate at live television, but both are worth trying if TiviMate’s layout does not suit you.

Best for a mixed household
IPTV Smarters Pro
Smarters takes the opposite approach to TiviMate: be everywhere, do everything. Android, Android TV, Fire TV, iOS, Apple TV, Windows and macOS, all with the same three-section layout — Live TV, Movies, Series — and the same login flow. Its on-demand areas look like a mainstream streaming service, with posters, synopses and season lists, which makes it the better app by a wide margin if half your viewing is films.
Its live TV is good rather than exceptional: the guide is shallower, switching is a beat slower, and there are fewer levers when a stream misbehaves. What you buy with that compromise is consistency. Setting it up for a relative over the phone is genuinely easier when you are both looking at the same screen. We compare the two head to head in TiviMate vs IPTV Smarters Pro.
Best for power users and old hardware
Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client
Kodi is not an IPTV player; it is a media centre that can become one through the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on. Its appeal is that it runs on nearly anything — old Android boxes, a Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS — and that it can sit alongside your local film library in one interface.
The trade-off is configuration. You will paste an M3U URL and a separate guide URL into a settings dialog, and the result is functional rather than elegant. Choose Kodi when the hardware is too old or too unusual for a modern player, or when you already live in Kodi for other reasons.
VLC — for testing, not for watching
VLC will play a single stream URL on virtually any platform ever made, which makes it the best diagnostic tool on this page. If a stream plays cleanly in VLC on a laptop over ethernet, the stream is fine and the problem is your device or your network. Nobody should watch television in VLC — there is no guide, no categories, no favourites — but everybody should keep it installed.
A quick diagnostic that saves a support ticket
Open the same channel in VLC on a computer plugged into your router by cable. Clean picture there but stuttering on the television means the fault is downstream of the provider — Wi-Fi, the box, or the app. Our eleven Firestick buffering fixes work through the rest in the order that resolves the most cases.
Best for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
Apple’s platforms are the sharpest constraint in this whole comparison, because the best Android players simply do not exist there. TiviMate does not, OTT Navigator does not, XCIPTV does not. What remains:
IPTV Smarters Pro and Smarters Player Lite are the usual answer, with the Lite build often the more current listing on the App Store. Both accept Xtream logins and cover live, films and series.
GSE Smart IPTV is the long-standing alternative, more technical in feel but flexible, with good support for multiple playlists and EPG sources.
Two practical warnings for Apple users. IPTV apps come and go from the App Store more often than on other platforms, so the exact listing that is current when you read this may differ from the one we tested. And on Apple TV, a device with no touchscreen and a minimal remote, check that the app has a proper tvOS layout rather than an iPad interface — it is the difference between a pleasant living room and a frustrating one.

Best for Samsung and LG Smart TVs
A Samsung running Tizen or an LG running webOS will not install any of the Android apps above. Your options are the IPTV apps in the television’s own store — the Smart IPTV family, IBO Player, Flix IPTV, Net IPTV and similar — and they all work the same unusual way:
- Install the app on the television and open it.
- It shows you a MAC address and a device key.
- You register that MAC on the app developer’s website and upload your playlist URL, or hand the details to your provider to load for you.
- You pay the developer a small one-off activation fee, usually a few euros, after a short trial. This is separate from your subscription.
These apps are more limited than TiviMate in every respect — thinner guides, fewer settings, slower switching — and they are tied to that one television by MAC address, so replacing the TV means registering again. We walk through the process for each brand on the supported devices page.
The cheapest upgrade in IPTV
If your Smart TV app frustrates you, a small Android TV box or streaming stick plugged into an HDMI port is the fix. It costs less than a couple of months of most subscriptions, it unlocks TiviMate and every other Android player, and it will keep working when the television’s own app store stops updating. Our guide to choosing an IPTV box covers what to buy.
Best on a PC or Mac
Desktop viewing is a minority habit but a useful one, especially for testing. IPTV Smarters Pro has Windows and macOS builds with the familiar layout. Kodi is the stronger choice if you want a proper ten-foot interface on a computer connected to a television. VLC remains the diagnostic. There is no desktop player that meaningfully beats what you can get on a $40 streaming box, so treat the computer as a second screen rather than the main one.

Any player. One subscription.
75,000+ live channels and 260,000+ films and series in 4K, working in TiviMate, Smarters, Kodi, a MAG portal or your TV's own app. Plans from $15.
Players and habits to avoid
Modded, cracked or “unlocked” builds. Search results are full of them. They are repackaged binaries of unknown provenance, running on a device that stores your credentials and sits inside your home network, and the money saved is a few euros. Install from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, the App Store, your television’s own store or the developer’s site.
Apps that demand their own subscription for content. A player is a viewer. If an app asks you to pay it for channels rather than asking for your provider’s credentials, it is not a player and you cannot be sure what you are buying.
Changing player to fix a problem. An empty guide is almost always a provider mapping issue or a wrong device clock. Buffering is almost always the network. Reinstalling a different app changes the symptom’s appearance, not its cause.
Importing forty thousand channels as favourites. Spend ten minutes hiding categories you will never watch. It is the single biggest improvement most people can make to their setup, and it costs nothing.
Setting any player up in five minutes
Whichever app you land on, the process is the same, and your subscription is not tied to it — you can repeat this in a different player tomorrow at no cost.
- Find your activation details: username, password and the portal or server URL. All three arrive by email when a line is created.
- Install the player from its official store listing and open it.
- Choose Xtream Codes login rather than M3U. Type the portal URL exactly, including
http://orhttps://and the port number if there is one. - Let the guide sync fully before judging anything — one to three minutes on a large package. A half-synced guide makes every player look broken.
- Hide the categories you do not want, then build your favourites. Do this deliberately; it is what makes the setup yours.
- If a stream stutters, raise the buffer in the player’s settings before blaming anything else, then work through the network.
Test all of this on your own hardware before you settle on a provider. A line on your own television takes a few minutes to set up and tells you more about how a service behaves than any review, including this one — and ours is backed by a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
There is no single winner, because the right answer changes with the device. On a Firestick or Android TV box used mainly for live channels, TiviMate is the strongest player available. On an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV it cannot be installed at all, so IPTV Smarters Pro or Smarters Player Lite takes over. On a Samsung or LG television you are limited to what the TV's own store offers, which usually means a Smart IPTV-style app registered by MAC address.
Most are free to install and use. A few charge a small one-off or annual fee for extras: TiviMate keeps recording, multiple playlists and custom channel groups behind its Premium licence, and several Smart TV apps charge a one-time device activation of a few euros after a trial period. None of these fees have anything to do with your subscription — they are paid to the app developer, not to your provider.
Yes, but less than people assume. The player controls how much video it holds in its buffer before playing and how it decodes the stream, so a lighter app on a weak device genuinely stutters less. Everything upstream — your Wi-Fi, your router, the provider's server and your ISP at peak time — matters more. Change the player last, after you have ruled out the network.
Xtream Codes wherever the app offers it. It hands the player your channel categories, the programme guide and the films and series sections as structured data. A plain M3U URL gives you a flat list of channels with no guide, and it has to be re-downloaded in full every time the app refreshes.
Yes. A subscription is a set of credentials — username, password and portal URL — not a piece of software. You can install five different players on five different devices with the same login. The only limit is how many streams your plan allows to play at the same time.
TiviMate on Android hardware, for two specific reasons: channel switching is faster, which matters when you are moving between three matches, and its buffer settings are granular enough to trade a little switching speed for stability on high-bitrate feeds. OTT Navigator is the closest alternative if you want even more control.
No. Those builds are repackaged binaries from unknown sources, installed on a device that then holds your subscription credentials and sits on your home network. Install from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, the App Store, your TV's own store or the developer's official site — nowhere else.
The bottom line
The best IPTV player app is whichever one was designed for the screen you are sitting in front of. TiviMate is the finest live-television interface anyone has built, and it is useless to you if you own an Apple TV. IPTV Smarters Pro is nobody’s favourite in any single category and is the right answer for most households because it is the only one that is the same everywhere.
Install two, spend an evening with each, keep the one you stop thinking about. That is the real test, and it costs nothing but the evening.
